Portugal was founded during the Reconquista of the Iberian Peninsula. It started as a small county and gradually expanded southwards.
On February 1st, King Carlos I and the crown prince, D. Luís I, were both assassinated in Lisbon by republicans.
On April 25th happened the revolution which led to the end of the dictatorship and of the colonial wars. As a sign of peace, soldiers placed carnations in their rifles.
On January 6th, Portugal and Spain joined the European Communities together, becoming the eleventh and twelfth countries to join.
